Steven Arc-Chapter 3: Lincoln Catches a Pikachu! Time to Start the Journey!

Steven and Lincoln were flying to Professor Oak's house on his Charizard. You see, Lincoln had slept past 8 o'clock. Steven had woken up a few minutes before 10 and had to wake Lincoln up. After a while of flying, the lab was in sight.

Steven: (commands) Charizard, land near the steps.

Charizard roared. It flew towards the steps and landed. Steven and Lincoln got off.

Steven: Charizard, return. (returns Pokémon)

They ran up the steps and into the Lobby where Professor Oak was sitting on the couch, waiting for Lincoln.

Prof. Oak: Ah, there you are. About time you got here. You're late.

Lincoln: (apologizes) Sorry, Professor...

Lincoln scratched the back of his head sheepishly. He was going to tell Professor Oak, but then Steven interrupted him.

Steven: (lying) I forgot to tell him to set the alarm. Totally on me.

Luckily, Professor Oak believed him.

Prof. Oak: As his teacher, you were supposed to remind him of something as simple as setting his alarm clock. Your forgetfulness may have just cost Lincoln the chance of getting a starter Pokémon. I gave away the last three I had just a few moments ago.

Steven: Sorry, won't happen again. (changes the subject) So, did he pass?

Once Lincoln heard what Steven said, other than the taking the blame for him, he started getting worried.

Prof. Oak: (muses) Well, he made a few mistakes on some of the questions about the badges and the type-matchups. Everything else is average at best.

Lincoln was disappointed with himself at possibly failing the exam.

Steven: (clarifies) It means you passed, Lincoln.

Lincoln stared at Steven and then back at Professor Oak.

Lincoln: (shaky voice) So...I...I passed?

Prof. Oak: Congratulations, Mr. Loud.

Then, Lincoln realized what Professor Oak said before.

Lincoln: Wait, you said that you gave away the last Pokémon?

Prof. Oak: (reassures) Now, now. There's no need to worry. If you're willing to wait a couple of days, I can try to acquire a starter for you then.

Lincoln refused to let it end like this.

Lincoln: But I've really been looking forward to this, Professor! Isn't there something else you can do?

Prof. Oak: I'm sorry, but until then, you'll just have to postpone your journey until we manage to obtain a starter for you.

Lincoln: (disappointed) (muttering) Aw man, that sucks...

Steven: (talking to Prof. Oak) Hold it. The rules never stated that a person couldn't go out and catch a Pokémon to be their starter, right?

Prof. Oak: Well, no, there's no such rule that stops them from doing that.

Steven: (points) Exactly. There are some Trainers whose Starter Pokémon wasn't one of the three, yet that didn't stop them from starting their journies.

Lincoln noticed the tone in Steven's voice was being directed at him. So he decided to play along.

Lincoln: Steven's right. Maybe I can catch a Pokémon to be my starter?

Prof. Oak: (tapping his chin) Hmm...the idea is a little unorthodox, to be sure. Are you sure about this, Mr. Loud? I can see about getting you a more traditional starter if you're willing to wait.

Lincoln: (adamant) I'm sure, Professor. At this point, I'll take anything I can get.

Professor Oak thought the idea over for a second.

Prof. Oak: (nodded) Very well then. I'll stop by Route 1 and see if I can catch you a Pidgey to serve as...

The building's electricity cuts off.

Prof. Oak: (confused) What in the world?

Lincoln: (shrugs) Looks like the power went out, Professor. You didn't forget to pay your power bill, did you?

Prof. Oak: (denies) Of course not. Rather, I think there might be something messing with the wiring.

Professor Oak made his way to the front door.

Prof. Oak: Let's go take a look, shall we?

Steven and Lincoln followed him outside. Once they were outside, Professor Oak turned towards Lincoln.

Prof. Oak: Alright, Mr. Loud, keep an eye out and don't do anything rash if it's a Pokémon that's responsible. We don't want it to become hostile and attack you. If you find it,Steven, then battle it. (walks away)

Steven walked away in another direction. He had a feeling on what might be causing the power outage. And if it is a Pokémon, he has a feeling on which one it is.

Lincoln: (thinking) Guess I better start searching too.

Lincoln headed in the opposite direction of Professor Oak.

Few Minutes Later

They looked around the area until Lincoln heard the sound of electricity crackling and content squeaking coming from nearby. He quickly rushed over to the source of the noises, he stops upon seeing what was responsible for the outage. A squat yellow-colored Pokémon with a lightning bolt-shaped tail and red circles on its cheeks, chewing on some wiring.

Steven: (appears) That's a Pikachu. They're known for causing power outages by chewing on wires.

Lincoln turned around to see Steven and Professor Oak behind him.

Prof. Oak: (annoyed sigh) Looks like I'm going to need to call the Electrode Electric company to come and fix the damaged wiring.

Lincoln: (wondering) ...Hey, Professor. What about that Pikachu? Do you have any plans in mind for it?

Professor Oak gave a curious look in response.

Lincoln: Because I want to catch it and have it be my starter Pokémon. Is that alright with you?

Prof. Oak: Are you sure? Pikachu are known for being notoriously difficult to train for beginners...

Lincoln: I'm sure, Professor. That's the one I want.

Lincoln gave the Mouse Pokémon a sharp glance. He had a strong feeling that this particular Pikachu was the same one from his dream. He didn't know how he knew this, but something in his gut told him that this was the one. He had to catch it.

Steven: I've got this one. Just sit back and watch.

Steven took out a Friend Ball.

Steven: Elekid, go! (throws Friend Ball)

Steven's Elekid appeared. It stretched out its body as it was getting ready for a battle.

Elekid: (calm) A Pikachu? That's easy to beat.

Steven: Elekid, it's time to hold back. We're helping Lincoln catch it.

Elekid: (thumbs-up) Sure thing.

Elekid had gone over to Pikachu and told it that they were going to battle. Pikachu stopped chewing on the wires and gave a confirmation. It then went away from the wires and was ready to battle.

Steven: Low Kick!

Elekid ran towards Pikachu, and then it jumped and extended its right foot out for a kick. Pikachu jumped up and dodged it. The kick created a small crater in the ground. Pikachu's cheeks began to spark as it was gathering up electricity in its pouches. Then, it's body was surrounded by electricity.

Prof. Oak: That's Thundershock.

Steven: (calm) Take the attack.

Pikachu released the electricity at Elekid, who stood there and took the attack and didn't even feel a thing.

Lincoln: (amazed) it took the attack like it was nothing.

Steven: Thunderbolt, but not too much power.

Elekid: (nods) Right.

It spun both of its arms around in a circle and the plug-like things on its head began to spark. It then released a burst of electricity that hit Pikachu, who took a lot of damage.

Steven: Now, Fire Punch.

Flames appeared around Elekid's fist. It then punched Pikachu, who was a little hurt to dodge it. Pikachu was sent skidding on the ground. After getting back up,flames surrounded Pikachu and burned it a little, causing it to take damage. The flames disappeared.

Prof. Oak: (talking to Lincoln) Looks like Pikachu's been burned.

Lincoln: Didn't the books say that there are certain attacks that cause statuses to be inflicted on a Pokémon? Like how some Fire-type attacks cause a burn status?

Prof. Oak: (nods) Correct. The burn status inflicts burn damage as long as it is in effect.

Steven: Elekid, Thunderbolt once more.

Elekid: It's over. (uses Thunderbolt)

Pikachu took damage again. It fell to the ground.

Steven: (turns head) Lincoln, now! Come over and use the Heal Ball I gave you!

Lincoln nodded and ran over. He then threw the Heal Ball at Pikachu, who was then sucked into it. The Heal Ball rocked three times before making a "ding" sound.

Steven: And Pikachu has been caught. You can collect it now.

Lincoln went and picked up the Heal Ball. As he stared at the pink orb, a broad grin appeared on his face. He finally had a Pokémon to call his own.

Meanwhile

Team Salamandra was on Cinnabar Island, waiting for Ash to arrive, not knowing that he doen't exist in that world. The Team Leader,Wendy, was an 18-year-old girl wearing a brown-colored plaid shirt, blue jean pants, white flip-flops,had long blonde hair, blue eyes, right arm was an automail, and a sea green-colored metal ring with a red gem in the middle that had blue swirl patterns inside it on her left index finger. Also, around her left wrist was a green Z-Watch that had a Dark Z-Crystal. With Wendy was her Umbreon. Her two teammates,Xander and Kenji, was at the Inn. She decided to do some training on the Beach.

Wendy: Umbreon, Shadow Ball!

Umbreon launched a Shadow Ball at the water. It created an explosion on the water's surface.

Wendy: Great. Now use Dark Pulse!

Umbreon let out a beam of dark purple-colored rings and it created an even bigger explosion than the Shadow Ball did.

Wendy: Greta job, Umbreon.

Umbreon: I want to go to the Hot Springs.

Wendy: I guess that's enough training. Let's go back to the Inn and relax.

Wendy left the Beach with her Umbreon following her.

Few Minutes Later

They were back inside the lab.

Prof. Oak: (talking to Lincoln) I must congratulate you for successfully managing to capture that Pikachu, Mr. Loud. Not only do you finally have a starter Pokémon, but I won't have to worry about it chewing on the lab's wiring again.

Lincoln: (grinning) You should be thanking Steven. After all, I never would have caught Pikachu without his help.

Steven: You should thank Elekid. He's the one who did all the battling.

Lincoln: (talking to Elekid) Thanks, Elekid.

Elekid: (proud) No problem. It was nothing.

Steven: See ya later, Elekid. Return.

He returned Elekid to its Poké Ball.

Steven: That Heal Ball should be able to get rid of Pikachu's burn, but it can't heal a Pokémon of injuries or damages, only statuses.

Prof. Oak: I can take care of that. If you will just hand me his Poké Ball, I can go ahead and put it in the healing machine for you.

Lincoln nodded and handed over Pikachu's Poké Ball over to Professor Oak, who places it into a strange-looking machine nearby.

Prof. Oak: (adds) Now then, while your Pokémon is getting treated, we should finish getting your preparations out of the way before you set off.

He walked over to a nearby table and picking up a cardboard box that was colored like a Poké Ball. Once he had retrieved it, he walks back over to Lincoln and hands it to him. Curious about the contents of the box,Lincoln opened it up,only to find three small books, five empty Poké Balls, two purple spray bottles, and what appeared to be a map inside.

Prof. Oak: (explains) That's a Starter Box, Mr. Loud. I always give these away to new Trainers like yourself. As you can see, inside are some guidebooks on the Kanto region,a map, some empty Poké Balls, and a few Potions to help keep your Pokémon healthy.

Lincoln placed the box's contents into his bag.

Lincoln: Thanks, Professor. So what about the money I asked you to convert. Did you manage to do it?

Prof. Oak: Of course. In fact, that particular subject is somewhat related to the next item I'm going to give you.

Professor Oak handed him some kind of laminated ID Card.

Prof. Oak: This is a Trainer Card. It's meant to serve as your identification, but it also functions as a debit card for your bank account. Make sure not to lose it.

Lincoln: (confused) Bank account? Why would I need something like that?

Steven: (talking to Lincoln) Every time a Trainer wins a battle against another, they win a prize money. That money is then deposited into an online bank account all Trainers have when they start their career. Even you have one.

Lincoln: So let me see if I got this right. I get paid for winning battles?

Steven: Yeah.

Lincoln: (continues) And all of that money ends up going into this account, which I can access whenever I need to?

Steven: Some of that money you have won't be available because of something called the "Trainer Tax". Basically, every month, you will be taxed exactly ten percent of your current balance. And before you ask, the money is used towards good causes like funding Professor Oak's lab.

Lincoln: (disbelief) (exclaims) Wait...I have to pay taxes now? But I'm a minor! Why do I have to pay for it, though? I'm not even an adult yet!

Steven: Actually, the moment a person graduates from the Trainer's exam, they will legally become an adult in the eyes of both the Pokémon League and some region's government.

Lincoln: (speechless)...You mean to tell me that I'm now officially considered an adult, even though I'm not even a teenager yet?

Steven: (smirking) Yes.

Lincoln let out a triumphant whoop before pumping his fists into the air.

Lincoln: Yes! I'm the first one the legitimately reach adulthood when it comes to my siblings! Suck it, Lori!

Steven: Lincoln,as much as I like to hear you diss your siblings, your only an adult in only the regions that have Pokémon. Like, Kanto for instance. As long as you're here or in any other region, you're entitled to the many privileges and responsibilities of being an adult. Heck, you can get married if you want to. Which I know you're not thinking about yet. You can get married at any time or age you want to.

Lincoln: (sputtering) W-well...good! (mumbling) I'm not exactly eager to start a family of my own just yet...

Lincoln regained his composure seconds later.

Lincoln: So battling will be the main source of my income?

Steven: Aside from selling items you don't need at some stores, then yeah. Just don't lose so many times or you'll end up broke.

Lincoln: Thanks. (talking to Prof. Oak) And I'm guessing the money you converted was put into my account?

Prof. Oak: Of course. I had all of it deposited this morning after I created the account for you. If you want to spend it, all you need to do is use that card when you go shopping and it'll do the rest.

Lincoln: Okay, got it. Thanks for setting it up for me, Professor.

Prof. Oak: Not a problem. Now then, there is one final thing I need to give you.

He walked over to a large terminal-like computer and pressed a few buttons, causing a red-colored rectangular device to pop out of a slot nearby. He handed it over to Lincoln.

Prof. Oak: (adds) Mr. Loud, allow me to introduce you to the Pokédex.

Lincoln gave the device an interested glance.

Lincoln: (muses) So this is that Pokédex thing you were talking about last night? What does it do?

Steven: Long story short, it allows one to collect and look up information on Pokémon. Like Gender,Level,Current Attacks, and its stats. It also helps professors like the Professor here to collect information for their studies on Pokémon.

He threw out a Poké Ball, and out came his Gloom.

Gloom: (talking to Steven) Did you need me?

Steven: (instructs Lincoln) Just open it up and point it at Gloom.

Lincoln nods before quickly opening the Pokédex and pointing it at Steven's Gloom, causing the red device to let out a few beeps before a computerized male voice spoke.

Pokédex: Gloom, the Weed Pokémon, and the evolved form of Oddish. When faced with danger, Gloom releases a foul fragrance from the pistil of its flower. This Female Gloom is Level 35 and knows the moves Sunny Day,Solarbeam,Infestation, and Sleep Powder.

Prof. Oak: (adds) But that's not all it can do. It can also provide you with advice on particular subjects regarding Pokémon, send and receive e-mail,take pictures and if you manage to find a good spot to use it,you can even browse the Internet with it. I suppose you can say that it's a Pokémon database combined with the features of the modern-day smartphone.

Lincoln: (thinking) Better not let Lori find out about this thing. Otherwise, I'll never hear the end of it from her.

He pocketed the Pokédex.

Lincoln: (wondering) So what about that earpiece thing Lisa sent over? Did you manage to get it working?

Prof. Oak: (nods) Surprisingly enough, I did. I even made sure to test it first to make sure it functioned properly. There is a catch though - you'll need speech samples of the Pokémon whose speech you wish to translate before it'll work. Thankfully, all you'll need to do is simply register the Pokémon in question in your Pokédex.

Lincoln: (interested) So by what you're saying, I can potentially understand what Gloom is able to say now?

Professor Oak took the earpiece out of his pocket.

Prof. Oak: (suggesting) Why don't you try the translator out for yourself, Mr. Loud? Just slip it on and activate it.

With an eager look on his face, Lincoln takes the earpiece from Oak and puts it on. After fiddling around with it for a few seconds, he finds a small button and presses it, causing the device to turn on. Another few seconds later, a female voice could be heard coming from the earpiece's speaker.

Earpiece: Speech samples detected. Proceeding with analyzation.

Then, the earpiece beeps before making a strange staticky sound that faintly sounded like dial-up noises.

30 Seconds Later

The noise stopped.

Earpiece: Sample analyzation complete. Translation for Gloom is now available.

Lincoln: Can you get your Gloom to say something?

Steven: (shrugs) Sure. (talking to Gloom) Gloom, say anything.

Gloom: I love my Trainer. He waters me,he trains with me,and he even lets me out to enjoy the sunlight.

Lincoln: (thinking) It...worked?

Lincoln grinned. He then got back up to this feet and gave Professor Oak a thumbs-up.

Lincoln: The translator worked, Professor!

Prof. Oak: (thumbs-up) Excellent! I'm sure that it will be of great use to you in your travels.

Suddenly, a soft chime went off.

Prof. Oak: Sounds like your Pikachu's all healed up. I'll go and get him for you.

While Professor Oak went to go retrieve Pikachu's Poké Ball, an odd idea formed in Lincoln's head.

Lincoln: (curious) Hey Professor...Can you scan Pokémon while they're in a Poké Ball? I want to see if I can get Pikachu's speech samples analyzed before I talk to him.

Professor thought the idea over for a moment.

Prof. Oak: I'm...not sure. You can try it if you want.

He placed the Heal Ball on a nearby table. Taking out his Pokédex once more, Lincoln points it at the pink orb. Much to his and Professor Oak's surprise, and Steven's amazement, the Pokédex acted as if it were being pointed at a Pokémon.

Pokédex: Pikachu, the Mouse Pokémon. It has small electric sacs on both its cheeks. If threatened, it releases electric charges from the sacs. This male Pikachu is Level 10 and knows the moves Growl,Thundershock, and Quick Attack.

Prof. Oak: (intrigued) Interesting...I never knew that the Pokédex was capable of doing that.

He took out another Poké Ball from his pocket.

Prof. Oak: Try it with this one - I want to see if it'll work or not.

Lincoln nodded and pointed the Pokédex at the Poké Ball in Professor Oak's hand.

The Pokédex only made a buzzing noise.

Pokédex: No Pokémon within scanning range.

Prof. Oak: (theorizes) Hmm...so I guess it only works with Poké Balls that contain Pokémon you own. Interesting.

He picked up Pikachu's Poké Ball and handed it to Lincoln.

Prof. Oak: So are you going to see if the translator works with your starter as well?

Lincoln: Nah, I think I'll wait until I leave Pallet Town before I introduce myself.

He pocketed the Poké Ball.

Lincoln: So is there anything else, Professor? There is one final thing - I would advise that you should make reaching Viridian City your first priority - there's a Pokémon Center where you can visit in order to register for the League challenge.

Lincoln: Viridian City Pokémon Center. Got it. Anything else?

Not that I can think of, Mr. Loud. Now you take care of yourself out there, and remember, you're more than welcome to contact me if you need anything.

Lincoln: Of course. Thanks, Professor.

Lincoln left.

Steven: (follows) (talking to Lincoln) I'm coming along too. I said I'll be your teacher and I meant it. Besides, you have no idea where Team Rocket would pop up. Strength in numbers.

Lincoln: Thanks, Steven.

Steven: (informs) There's a Gym in Viridian City but the Gym Leader uses strong Pokémon. So your best bet is to head to the Pewter City. The Gym Leader there uses Rock-type Pokémon. Can you hand me your map?

Lincoln went into his bag and brought out the map. He handed it to Steven.

Steven: (pointing) We just have to cut through this forest,go past Viridian City, through Viridian Forest, and finally, we make it to Pewter City. Let's go.

The Moon Ball opened up and out came Espeon.

Steven: I guess you want to travel along as well, right, Espeon?

Espeon: (nods) Yeah.

Steven: Well, let's go then.

Lincoln,Steven,Gloom, and Espeon walked down the stairs.

Info #1: He decided to send out Elekid because it was going to be an easier battle if he had used his other Pokémon. only wants to battle Electric-type Pokémon or Pokémon that know Electric-type moves.

Info #2: Wendy loves to use Dark-type Pokémon. She's the winner of the Hoenn Grand Festival.
